This statement covers both this website and the three dining rooms, including the things that are not yet good enough.

Our commitment

Maison Noir aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 at Level AA, and to meet our obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act in all three restaurants. We treat accessibility as part of building the thing rather than as a retrofit, and we would rather publish a known limitation than claim a conformance we have not tested.

Conformance status: this website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Partially conformant means most of the site meets the standard and the exceptions are listed below.

What we have built into this site

  • A skip to main content link as the first focusable element on every page.
  • Semantic HTML landmarks: one banner, one navigation, one main and one contentinfo region per page, with headings in a correct order and no skipped levels.
  • Body text at a contrast ratio of at least 10:1 against the background, well above the 4.5:1 minimum. Muted text, form hints and captions all clear 4.5:1, and the gold used for links and prices measures 6.9:1.
  • Visible focus indicators on every interactive element, using a two pixel outline with an offset rather than a colour change alone. Focus is never removed.
  • Full keyboard operation. The overlay menu traps focus while open, closes on Escape, and returns focus to the button that opened it. Accordions and dropdowns are real buttons with correct aria-expanded and aria-controls attributes.
  • Descriptive alternative text on every image, and decorative elements marked aria-hidden so they are not announced.
  • Form labels that are always visible, never placeholder text. Errors appear directly below the field they belong to, in text as well as colour, are announced in an alert region, and focus moves to the first field that needs attention.
  • Touch targets of at least 44 by 44 pixels, with spacing between them.
  • Text that reflows without horizontal scrolling from 320 pixels upward, and scales to 200 percent without loss of content. Zoom is not disabled.
  • All animation is suppressed under prefers-reduced-motion, including the title reveal and every scroll fade. Nothing on this site autoplays, flashes, or moves without the visitor scrolling.
  • No audio anywhere on the site, and no content that plays automatically.
  • Content is visible without JavaScript. Reveal animations only apply when scripting is available, so a page never ships blank.

How we test

Every page is checked with keyboard only navigation, with the VoiceOver screen reader on macOS and Safari, with NVDA on Windows and Firefox, at 200 percent browser zoom, and at viewport widths of 360, 768, 1024, 1440 and 1920 pixels. Contrast ratios are calculated rather than eyeballed. We re-test whenever we change a template.

Known limitations

We would rather tell you these than have you find them.

  • Third party advertising. Advertisements on this site are served by ad networks and their internal markup is outside our control. Ad slots are labelled and are placed away from navigation and controls, but we cannot guarantee the accessibility of an advertisement's own content.
  • Date inputs. The reservation, event and gift card forms use the native browser date field, whose calendar interface differs between browsers and is not equally good in all of them. You can always type the date instead, and you can always book by phone.
  • Long menu pages. The full food menu is a long single column by design. It is fully navigable by headings, but reaching a specific course with a screen reader takes more steps than we would like. We are looking at an in page course index.

Lighting and sound

Our rooms are deliberately dark, which is a genuine accessibility issue for guests with low vision. Every host stand keeps a small task light you can borrow for the length of your meal, and large print menus are printed at 18 point on matte stock. Ask and it is handed over without any fuss.

Sound levels sit around 68 decibels at the busiest point of service, which is moderate for a restaurant of this kind. If you need a quieter table, the 5:00 PM and 5:30 PM seatings are substantially quieter and we will hold a corner table for you if you tell us on the reservation form.

We reply to accessibility reports within three business days with either a fix or a date. If we cannot fix something, we will tell you that plainly and describe the alternative we can offer.
