Nothing optional is stored on your device until you tell us it can be. This page lists everything we use and how to change your mind.
What a cookie is, briefly
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to keep. Similar technologies include local storage, which works the same way from your point of view. This policy covers both, and we use the word "cookie" for all of them.
Your choices, and how we honour them
On your first visit a banner appears at the bottom of the page. It does not cover the content, it does not appear as a full screen interstitial, and it offers three real choices:
- Accept all. Strictly necessary, analytics and advertising.
- Reject optional. Strictly necessary only. This is a single click and it is not hidden behind a second screen.
- Manage preferences. Turn analytics and advertising on or off independently, then save.
Until you choose, we set nothing except the record of your choice once you make it. No analytics script and no advertising script is loaded before consent. You can change your decision whenever you like using the Cookie Preferences button in the footer of every page, and you can withdraw a consent as easily as you gave it.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking strictly necessary storage will not break the site, but it means your cookie choice cannot be remembered, so the banner will appear again on every visit.
Category one: strictly necessary
These make the site work. They cannot be switched off in our banner because without them we cannot honour your choice or keep a form usable.

Category two: analytics
Off unless you turn it on. These tell us in aggregate which pages people read and where they leave, which is how we decided to publish the Journal and to put prices on every page. We do not use analytics to identify you personally and we do not combine it with your reservation record.

Category three: advertising
Off unless you turn it on, and off by default in the Manage preferences panel. Some pages on this site carry clearly labelled third party advertising. When you allow this category, Google and other vendors may set cookies to select and measure those advertisements.
Google, as a third party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site. Its use of advertising cookies enables Google and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to this site and other sites on the internet, including through the DoubleClick DART cookie. You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings, and from many other vendors at aboutads.info or the Network Advertising Initiative. Refusing this category in our banner prevents these cookies being set here at all, which is the more complete option.

What we do not use
No social media tracking pixels. No advertising cookies from platforms we do not name on this page. No fingerprinting, no session recording, no heat mapping and no cross site tracking of our own. We do not sell the data any of these cookies produce.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
Browsers send Do Not Track inconsistently and there is no agreed standard for honouring it, so we do not rely on it. We do respect the Global Privacy Control signal where your browser or extension sends one: it is treated as a request to opt out of advertising, and the advertising category will stay off.
Changes and questions
If we add or remove a cookie we will update this page and change the date at the top. Where a new cookie falls into a category you have already refused, it will not be set until you change that preference.
